Continuing on the Path
I have completed about 75 little houses out of 800. I have learned that it is truly about the journey rather than the result. I have experienced big improvements, and I am incredibly hopeful. What can I say? I must keep going, keep finding the road, keep seeing the freedom within my situation. The little houses are being completed well, my practice is going okay. My health is still poor, and it is still my hope that by reciting more little houses I will also find more stable health and well being. I guess my goals have to be realistic. For this year, I hope for incremental improvement. I hope I can say at the end of next year that I am healthier in body, mind, and spirit than I was a year ago. I have had a pleasant Christmas holiday and I'm excited to travel down to San Diego for New Years!

Setbacks
Recently, the weather has been poor. That has been part of the reason I have had setbacks, with my health, my mental well being, and my ability to recite for little houses. Thankfully, I was able to finish reciting one LH today. And I have another one to start. My dreams last night showed me that I have several energy requesters that are in need of LH's, so I hope that I can keep up the pace. The optimistic signs are very encouraging, including overall improvement in mental well being and ability to do more in my life. The little houses really work, but in my situation it is very difficult because I need to recite so many and I am very ill physically and mentally. It seems impossible sometimes, but I remember how well the little houses have worked for me and others and I think of my family and friends and what it will mean when I recover...ah, a wonderful thought. Thank you, Cameron

Bump(s) in the Road
With the rain has come a worsening of symptoms, and a fear that things won't get better. Or at least not to the extent that I hope. According to experience and my understanding of my situation, yin beings or energy requesters can hang around us more when it is overcast and rainy, because the yin energy is higher and the sunny yang energy can't get through as much. So as a result, I am more uncomfortable and I have more problems with negative thoughts and sporadic mental activity. I am still completing little houses at a good pace, and I have about 60 completed out of the required 800. Wish me luck getting through the rain!

Lama Zopa Rinpoche on Mental Illness

Paranoia, Depression and Psychosis

A man suffering from a complex
mental illness was being treated with medication and occasional
hospitalization. He still had severe paranoia, depression and psychosis, and
for the past two years he had believed that someone was going to kill him. He
and his wife were tired, weak and scared.

Dear
Suzanne,
Rinpoche spent a long time checking for your husband, Jason, and this is what came out:
1) Do the wrathful puja throwing the torma of Most Secret Hayagriva. This is what came out most beneficial, but it is a very big puja that takes a few days to prepare and the puja is for a day or more. It is best if you are going to sponsor this puja, to combine it so the monks dedicate for others who are sick. Maybe there are others you know in a similar situation or having spirit harm, so please also include their names in the dedication. Can you please include one girl called Rheanna. She is also in hospital and in a very difficult situation, similar to your husband. This puja needs to be done by Sera Je Monastery.
2) Releasing from the harm of naga and landlord (lü-dang-sadag-gi-don-drol). It comes out best for Geshe-la to do this puja for him.
3) Gyal-der puja (puja of spirit king). This puja is not common in the Gelug tradition. Rinpoche will do this puja for him.
4) Your husband needs to take a long-life initiation. This could be requested from Geshe-la, but it means he would need to take Geshe-la as his guru, so that part is a personal decision.
5) Release 140 animals—you and Jason can do this yourselves
6) Nor-sang incense puja (Padmasambhava incense puja). This is translated into English and it comes out best if you and Jason do this yourselves.
7) Make 150 long-life tsa-tsas (the tsa-tsa that has three long-life deities on one mould). You can do the small size. It comes out best for you and Jason to do this yourselves.
8) Long-life puja namgyal tse-chog. Request Tsawa Khangsten to do this for Jason.
9) Lu-zong puja. Request Geshe-la to do this puja for Jason.
So this is Rinpoche's advice for your husband. Let me know if you need any help on any of these.

A student had been regularly
visiting a man in hospital who was severely depressed. She asked Rinpoche
whether she should continue or not, as she thought that it had become
hopeless.

When
nothing works, and you don’t have the necessary power, you must rely on higher
beings: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Make strong prayers to the Twenty-One Taras
and visualize light rays, which are the essence of great bliss and cause the
depressed person to generate the whole path, are emitted from the heart of the
Twenty-One Taras. Each atom of the person is filled with bliss. Then think that
he generates the whole path—compassion, bodhicitta and wisdom realizing
emptiness.

Teenage Son
with Schizophrenia

Advice for a student’s 16-year-old
son, who is a violent, paranoid schizophrenic, and is a danger to himself and
others.
|

My
dear Amanda,
Thank you very much for your kind letter. This is based on your son’s karma. He is getting these experiences because of the karma of having harmed sentient beings in the past, something like that, so he is experiencing this paranoia caused by spirit harms.
Thank you very much for your kind letter. This is based on your son’s karma. He is getting these experiences because of the karma of having harmed sentient beings in the past, something like that, so he is experiencing this paranoia caused by spirit harms.
It
would be good to get a geshe, someone who lives in pure morality and has
familiarity with such situations, to do pujas for your son. It depends on how
heavy the karma is. Those with less heavy karma can recover. Not everybody
recovers, but some do. It would be good to invite Khadro-la or some lamas from
India and Nepal to do pujas. Those with bodhicitta and tantric realizations are
more powerful in dealing with such problems.
The
che-trul puja, Liberating from Harm, Black Magic and So Forth,
should be done.
Your
son should have a blessing string to wear round his neck.
It
also came out very good to have one pill from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to
burn again and again every day for a few times. I will check about this pill.
[Rinpoche
checked more and said there is a black Manjushri protection that your son needs
to wear and also a special pill from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, to wear
around his neck. A monk is sewing this now, and then we will see how we can
send it safely from India.]
It’s
also good to advise your son that what is happening—his thoughts of people harming
him—is because of a spirit influencing his mind. They are not his own thoughts.
They are not at all true, it’s just to harm him. When this karma ripens, this
is what happens. He thinks that some person comes and says bad things, but it
didn’t happen. It’s good to analyze; good to check. We don’t have to believe
what we hear. Your son is possessed by spirit harm; a spirit has occupied his
mind. Believing in what the spirit says is sometimes very strong and can even
cause people to commit suicide. The spirit says all kinds of things. In Japan,
a spirit once told someone to push another person in front of a train. It is
all based on past lives. Everything comes from the mind. This applies to
problems but it’s also the same with happiness. All the happiness up to
enlightenment comes from the mind.
I
will pray, and I will see if I can do some pujas. I will also send you some
Hayagriva pills from my retreat. Burn a pill in front of your son so that he
inhales the smoke.
I
will also ask the monks at Nalanda Monastery in France to do the Four
Mandala Offerings to Tara puja for your son, as well as druk-chu-ma
puja.
With
much love and prayer...

Paranoid Schizophrenia

A student wrote asking for advice
regarding her 25-year-old son, who has paranoid schizophrenia.

My
dear Christine,
Thank you very much for your kind letter, and I am very sorry for the delay in replying.
Thank you very much for your kind letter, and I am very sorry for the delay in replying.
It
came out beneficial in my observations for you to do Medicine Buddha puja for
your son, for his future rebirth and for this life. During the puja, make
strong prayers for him to actualize the Three Principal Aspects of the Path
and the Two Stages. Make prayers that whenever death comes, that he be
reborn in the pure land, where he can be enlightened or achieve a perfect human
rebirth and then achieve enlightenment quickly.
Chant
the Medicine Buddha mantra so that he can hear it.
Also, if you can, recite Maitreya Buddha mantra, Namgyalma mantra, and mantra of Inconceivable Celestial
Mansion Very Secret, for actualizing supreme success. Also, chant OM MANI PADME
HUM mantra. Don’t just chant the mantras once a day, but two, three, or four
times a day. Each time chant them a few times. These mantras have benefits of
never ever being reborn in the lower realms.
Then,
there is another Buddha’s name that is very good for you to chant:
CHOM
DÄN DÄ DE ZHIN SHEG PA DRA CHOM PA YANG DAG PAR DZOG PÄI SAN GYÄ RINCHHEN TSUG
TOR CHEN LA CHHAG TSHÄL LO
(Translation:
TO THE DESTROYER QUALIFIED GONE BEYOND, GONE AS IT IS, FOE DESTROYER PERFECT
AND COMPLETE BUDDHA WITH THE JEWEL PINNACLE I PROSTRATE)
This
is a very powerful mantra, and is the best one to be recited when a person is
dying. It should be recited before the sense of hearing ceases and until it
ceases. You can also recite it before then, I am just mentioning one of the
benefits, but this is for you to recite each day so your son can hear it.
Also,
try to get an audio tape or CD of the recitation of the Arya Sanghata Sutra and play it in the house,
one, two, or three times, however many times you can, so that it purifies him
just by his hearing it. It purifies the heavy negative karmas, the five
uninterrupted negative karmas, which cause, without a break, for one to be
reborn in the lowest hells, where the duration of the suffering is one
intermediate eon. The five uninterrupted negative karmas are: having killed
one’s father and mother, causing blood to flow from a Buddha, causing disunity
in the Sangha, and killing an Arhat.
So,
that is one method: to play the Arya Sanghata Sutra CD or tape. This not
only helps and purifies your son and you, but anybody in the house – cats,
dogs, anybody who hears it. You can get the CD from the shop at the Dharma
center.
Also,
if you can, chant the Three Principle Aspects of the Path, the Heart Sutra, the Foundation of All Good Qualities, and any of
the short lam-rim prayers that contain the essence of the entire path and leave
positive imprints in his mind and in the minds of those that hear them.
If
you have holy objects, statues, stupas, and texts (such as lam-rim prayers, the
Diamond Cutter Sutra, etc.) you can put them
on a table, as many as possible, as well as tsa-tsas, and then take your son
around them and let him circumambulate the table with all the holy objects on
it. At the same time, chant mantras. If he can manage this, do it two or three
times: in the morning after washing and before going to bed. Also, you and
anyone else in the house can go around the table, and also the animals.
This
is for purification. Then, depending on how many holy objects are on the table,
they create that many causes for enlightenment, which means, that many causes
for liberation and a good rebirth in the next life.
The
other thing is to let him practice kindness, a good heart, tolerance, and
contentment every day, in a skilful way. He can be content or rejoice at the
good things that happen for others, practice forgiveness, compassion, being
kind to others, etc. In this way, you are not just waiting for the next life to
help him be a better person, you are able to make your son a good, kind, compassionate,
and happier person in this life.
A
mother praying for her child and a child praying for its mother is very
powerful for success, to bring success. A disciple praying for his or her
teacher and a teacher praying for the disciple is also very powerful. It is the
same for roommates and people sharing the same household.
So,
pray to Medicine Buddha, as I mentioned above, when you do the puja. It is very
powerful for success.
Then,
I have two protections that I have blessed, which I will mail to you, with some
photos of Buddhas and other things that you can put on the table, or put so
your son can see them. The protections are for your son to wear, you put them
around his neck, but he has to take them off when he showers so they don’t get
wet.
It
is also very important for you not to think that your son’s sickness has been
created by spirits. Spirits are not the creator of his problems or your
problems. The creator of the problems is negative actions performed with
ignorance, anger, attachment, and the self-cherishing thought. The result of
this is problems such as schizophrenia, paranoid delusions, etc. The cause is
the negative karma created. The spirit harm is the condition.
If
one has not created the cause, then the spirit cannot harm you. If one has
created negative karma, then the spirit can harm you. So, then one
hallucinates, sees things or hears things, maybe even hears plants talking, or
dogs and cats talking, also hears people saying bad things, etc. It is good to
recognize that this is the result of one’s own negative karma, and to recognize
the hallucination as a hallucination; this is extremely important. When one
hears some voices, criticism, or whatever, then you don’t believe it. If you
believe it, then it is a problem. Sometimes it can get very bad and makes the
person want to commit suicide. The spirit can influence the person so that he
or she jumps off a building. An example is thinking a person is talking badly
about you. If you are able to check with the person to see if he or she is
doing that, ask him or her, and find out that he or she is not actually doing
this, then that can help you to see that maybe you cannot believe what your
mind is saying. This then becomes a great protection. If you believe and follow
what you are hearing, then that can become unbelievably dangerous, can cause
harm to yourself, to your family, and other people.
There
is one puja called Lu Dang Sadakgi Dondrol. If you are able, ask the
geshe to do this. This puja is for protection and to dispel spirit harm.
Also,
if you can, recite Most Secret Hayagriva mantra.
I
am also mailing you some blessed water from my recent retreat, so you can add
this to a big bottle of water and your son can sip a little each day.
I
am also making prayers for your son and your whole family.
With
much love and prayers...

My
very dear Linda,
Thank you very much your kind letter. Sorry it took a long time to reply to you. I read your last letter a few times.
Thank you very much your kind letter. Sorry it took a long time to reply to you. I read your last letter a few times.
Regarding
this recent letter, according to my divinations it comes out best for you to
practice Lion-face Dakini. If there is an opportunity for you to take the
Lion-face Dakini great initiation then you should try to take it, but if not
you can still do the practice.
Recite
four malas of Lion-face Dakini every day with concentration. Beams emit from
the merit field, from Lion-face Dakini, and all the buddhas and bodhisattvas of
the 10 directions and absorb into one’s heart, completely illuminating oneself.
Beams then emit from the syllables of the mantra at your heart, like the sun
rising, and eliminate all sicknesses and spirit harm, as well as the causes,
which are negative karma and delusions. At the end of each mala, for the last
21 mantras, think that you receive all the realizations of Lion-face
Dakini, as well as the whole merit field. Also, it would be very good for you
to take the Most Secret Hayagriva initiation, at least the torma initiation;
this is all for your healing.
In
Tibetan Buddhism there are so many methods in Sutra and Tantra for this kind of
problem. It seems it is 100 per cent clear from your own experience that this is
spirit harm. There is very little education in or understanding of spirit harm
in Western society. This learning has not yet been discovered and it has not
become a subject of knowledge in Western psychology. Western psychology and
psychiatry need to develop this and there is a long way to go, even to
understand gross things about it.
In
Buddhism, one small puja or a mantra can stop it, but with Western methods
probably your whole life you will not be helped by psychology or psychiatry, or
they suggest you take a lot of medicines and then there are side effects. Maybe
the medicines just calm it down, like drinking alcohol or drugs for a time and
not activating the mind. But one suffers all these side effects.
Also,
you should wear the protection of the White Umbrella deity together with So So
Dharma protection. You can ask the geshe at your Dharma center for these.
Please
request the geshe to come to your house to read from the Sung du a text
called Yang Pai Drong-Khyer Du jug pai zung. It is one or two pages, not
many, so he should read it 20 times at your house. Then request the geshe to
recite the mantra called Destroying the mara, which is at the end of the
Lam-rim Chen-mo text, the very last page. He
should recite that seven times.
This
is what should be done. If possible the geshe can do these two recitations at
your house from time to time until your problem is completely better, maybe
once or twice a month.
If
possible you need a wrathful fire puja, peaceful fire puja, and increasing fire
puja done for you. The most important are the increasing fire puja and the
wrathful fire puja. These two came out in my divinations as very important. If
possible it is best for them to be done at your house, but that may be
difficult if your house doesn’t have space or due to local regulations. If they
can’t be done at your house then the fire pujas can be done elsewhere. The
wrathful fire puja could be done at Kopan Monastery. You can discuss this with
the geshe or he can try to do them for you.
The
other thing you need to have done is Ma Mer Thruk Kong puja. Maybe this
puja can be done by the monasteries in South India or you can ask the Nepal
Gelugpa monastery at Bouda (Kyidong Samden Ling). You can ask the abbott to do
the puja. You have to make offerings or they can send you a bill. The geshe can
help you organize all of this.
There
is also a practice for chasing away spirits, so I will send that practice to
the geshe to do for you. Also, the geshe should come to your house and do
Yamantaka meditation to bless the house and protect the place.
You
and any other people at your house should recite the Heart Sutra.
Basically
the problems come from your mind. According to basic Buddhist philosophy,
enlightenment and hell come from your mind. How does it come from your mind?
One thing is past karma, having harmed sentient beings in the past or performed
non-virtuous actions, either something done in relation to the gurus or holy
objects.
Delusion
and karma are the main causes. Karma motivates delusion, and the root is
ignorance, not knowing the ultimate nature of the “I” and aggregates, and is
also connected with the self-cherishing thought—wrong things done in the past,
negative karma, performed with the self-cherishing thought, and also things
performed in this life with the self-cherishing thought, which is a mistaken
action.
Now
you can generate compassion toward those spirits, they are also your mother
sentient being. If you can remember the subject—that they have been your mother
countless times and countless times gave you your body, protected your life
from many hundreds of dangers each day, gave you education, and bore so many
hardships for your well being. They have suffered so much for you so many
times. Meditate on these things and then generate the wish to repay their
kindness. You have met the Buddhadharma, received a precious human body, and
met the virtuous friend. You have such an incredible opportunity to achieve
liberation and enlightenment and they don’t have this. They are suffering so
much; they are under the power of ignorance and the three poisonous minds,
under the power of karma, have no opportunity to practice Dharma, and are
experiencing so much suffering.
Generate
loving kindness toward them. All they want is happiness, but they are ignorant
and create the causes for more and more suffering. Think that you want to cause
them happiness and bring them to higher rebirths, liberation, and
enlightenment; free them from all sufferings and their causes. Think that they want
to be free from suffering but they are ignorant, then think that you will free
them from all the sufferings and their causes. Then generate the special
attitude that you will do this by yourself alone and generate bodhicitta,
thinking, “Therefore I have to achieve enlightenment not only for them but for
all sentient beings.”
Sometimes
generate bodhicitta with them by exchanging yourself for others and practicing
equalizing meditation. Think how all suffering comes from the self-cherishing
thought and how you receive all your past, present, and future happiness,
liberation, and even enlightenment from them. Use them to develop bodhicitta
and compassion. You can read some part of the teachings to the spirits, as well
as recite the Heart Sutra, chant mantras for them, and, especially, you
can read or give bodhicitta teachings to them and sometimes teachings on
emptiness. Sometimes you can visualize the spirits as deities.
There
are some hallucinations that are due to when a person has a fever or due to medicines,
drugs, etc., like the effect of LSD. The hallucination is not to do with
spirits but due to the power of the substances. This is similar to your
situation, which is what many people in the West call schizophrenia or a crazy
mind. However, this is connected with spirit harm, and when your luck or
fortune is down, due to some non-virtuous action that one has done, then the
spirit finds a way to harm you. So, it comes together like this, all based on
past karma, then based in delusion. This is according to reality and this is
what the Buddhist teachings say.
So,
first try these things. That’s all for now, I will send the text to the geshe.
If you can’t get the protections, let me know and I can send them as well.
With
much love and prayers...

A student wrote to Rinpoche about
his wife, who suffered from schizophrenia, sudden mood changes, and other
problems. Rinpoche gave the following advice.
|

My
very dear Charlie,
Thank you for your kind letter. I have checked regarding your wife and there are some protections that she needs to wear. If you give me your postal address I will send these to her.
Thank you for your kind letter. I have checked regarding your wife and there are some protections that she needs to wear. If you give me your postal address I will send these to her.
There
is one puja that needs to be done for her by a geshe or good Tibetan lama. I do
not know if there are any geshes or lamas near where you live, but maybe you
can check. If there is a geshe or good lama available, you need to request for
the puja called Gagu to be performed. Your wife needs to be present at
this puja.
Then,
according to my observations, she needs to do Medicine Buddha practice. This would be extremely
good for her to do. It is very powerful purification, brings all success, and
enables all her wishes to be fulfilled.
It
is important to perform the practice with a good heart, with the wish to free
all sentient beings from all sufferings and bring them to enlightenment,
including oneself. For these reasons you recite the mantra and perform the
practice of Medicine Buddha. Practice it not only to heal your own sickness but
also for all sentient beings’ sicknesses, as well as to stop wars, famines,
disease, torture, dangers from the elements (fire, earth, wind, and water), as
well as all the sufferings of all sentient beings, not only the ones in this
world.
I
will also dedicate the Sur (offering smell to the pretas) practice that
I do each night to your wife.
There
is another practice that she should do called Lion-face Dakini. The important
part of this practice is for her to recite the mantra and the praise.
Also,
it would be very beneficial for her to recite the mig-me mantra; this is
Lama Tsongkhapa’s mantra. This would be very good as a daily practice, to
receive blessings from the guru to achieve realizations, complete all the
qualities, attain enlightenment, and be able to liberate sentient beings from
all samsaric sufferings and bring them to enlightenment.
With
much love and prayers...
Buddhist Experts on Spirit Harm
Here is some information from the Buddhist perspective on Schizophrenia
and the types of mental illness cause by spirit harm. There are things
that can be done:
Healing Cube
By Master YongHua, Thursday, October 1st, 2009
I grew up with a penchant for Chinese Gongfu movies. To this
date, there are still some cable channels that specialize in showing
such movies.
Their plot is typically simplistic. The good guys have a martial arts school in a small town. The bad guys show up, thrash the dojo, kill the head master and seriously injure the hero who barely escapes with his life. He nurses his wounds, swears revenge, and refines his gongfu skills. He appears from his hideout, thrashes the bad guys’ place, and the bad dudes all die a gory death.
The appeal of such movies lies in their simple plot. As I watched, I quietly approved of the revenge: it seemed just and right that good won over evil, even though the bad guys frequently suffered painful deaths. Intuitively, it seems right that there should be payback for doing evil and/or committing offenses. Such is the law of cause and effect: inflict pain and suffering and thou shalt endure pain and suffering, destroy and thou shalt be destroyed.
Now that I’ve become a left home person, I encounter many people who came to me because they have had illnesses that were incurable. It seems that going to the temple is one of the last stops in their desperate search for healing.
I tend to take the opportunity to talk to them about the law of cause and effect. I try to explain to them that from the Buddhist perspective, sickness is retribution for offenses committed in the past. For example, kill a rabbit and you must undergo the equivalent pain and suffering that you inflicted on that innocent animal. After all, doesn’t it seem fair to you? Remember those Chinese gongfu plots? Kill and destroy and it’s just and right that you suffer similar destruction and death!
There are three overlapping aspects of healing:
1. From the Western Medicine Perspective (healing 1):
The Western medicine specializes at dissecting illnesses and removing the defective parts. They excel at treating symptoms of diseases. No matter how skilled they become at locating and isolating the causes of problems, their approach is still limited in effectiveness. That is why, when combined with the Eastern medicine, their healing effectiveness drastically increases.
2. From the Eastern Medicine Perspective (healing 2):
Healing has a more systemic perspective (the extra dimension “squares” it). The Eastern medicine looks at illnesses as imbalances of the body. While they may not be as good as the Western medicine in local treatment, they tend to be more effective at prevention and comprehensive healing.
For example, when engaged in a battle, don’t we have battle fronts and headquarters? If we focus only on the front line, we can be assured that the enemy will return. Or, it may appear that we are winning the battle, but in fact, the enemy is simply shifting its forces in a flanking effort to win the bigger war.
One superior aspect of the Eastern medicine approach is the concept of Qi: that life force that flows through clearly defined energy channels inside our bodies. Illnesses are caused by that Qi being blocked in various places. This is why one can be healed through the unblocking of blockages through herbal medicine, acupuncture, acupressure, or exercise.
While the combined approaches of Eastern and Western medicine offer tremendous advantages, they still cannot handle mental illnesses.
3. From the Buddhist Perspective (healing 3):
This is because neither of the above approaches can get to the root of the problems: they still are stuck at manifestations and symptoms.
Many healers fail to realize that illnesses are caused by ghosts and spirits (yin world). These entities invade our bodies, causing Qi energy to be blocked, which then manifests as deterioration of the specific body parts.
In other words, removing the defective body part or unblocking the Qi alone does not fix the root source of the problem.
When Great Master Xuan Hua was alive, he could provide healing by chasing away these ghosts and spirits. People with incurable diseases would be healed with his help. My late grandmother was also healed by him after the Western and Eastern medicine doctors had given up hope for her recovery.
That is why, when the Venerable Xuan Hua was still in the world, many people would seek him out for help. By the time he left us, his body was thus riddled with diseases and he was in great agony. This is probably because people did not realize that when he agreed to help, he basically meddled in their affairs and thus had to die on their behalf. After all, someone has to die or suffer in order for a karmic debt to be settled!
At any rate, what does this have to do with healing your sicknesses?
- Understand that illnesses are a form of debt settlement. Because we inflicted pain and suffering in the past, e.g. through a killing karma, we now must undergo our retribution. Be careful about creating killing offenses!
- The retribution manifests as destruction of our body and assets as well as pain and suffering for us and loved ones. This is why people in the medical profession tend to have illnesses because when they earn their living by healing others, they are meddling in the debt settlement process, and thus assume the responsibility for part or all of the debt repayment.
- The lucky and more blessed ones may encounter Mahayana and receive help. They may be instructed to create merit and virtues for healing purposes. In many instances, these vengeful ghosts and spirits may listen to reason and might accept these merit and virtues as repayment in lieu of inflicting pain and suffering on those who owe them. It’s the proverbial win-win scenario: swapping destruction for blessings, or pain and suffering for Dhyana bliss.
Lama Zopa Rinpoche on Spirit Harm
[posted Nov. 2005]
A student wrote to
Rinpoche about his wife, who suffered from schizophrenia, sudden mood
changes, and other problems. Rinpoche gave the following advice.
My very dear Charlie,
Thank you for your kind
letter. I have checked regarding your wife and there are some
protections that she needs to wear. If you give me your postal address I
will send these to her.
There is one puja that
needs to be done for her by a geshe or good Tibetan lama. I do not know
if there are any geshes or lamas near where you live, but maybe you can
check. If there is a geshe or good lama available, you need to request
for the puja called Gagu to be performed. Your wife needs to be present
at this puja.
Then, according to my
observations, she needs to do Medicine Buddha practice. This would be
extremely good for her to do. It is very powerful purification, brings
all success, and enables all her wishes to be fulfilled.
It is important to
perform the practice with a good heart, with the wish to free all
sentient beings from all sufferings and bring them to enlightenment,
including oneself. For these reasons you recite the mantra and perform
the practice of Medicine Buddha. Practice it not only to heal your own
sickness but also for all sentient beings’ sicknesses, as well as to
stop wars, famines, disease, torture, dangers from the elements (fire,
earth, wind, and water), as well as all the sufferings of all sentient
beings, not only the ones in this world. I will also dedicate the Sur
(offering smell to the pretas) practice that I do each night to your
wife. There is another practice that she should do called Lion-face
Dakini. The important part of this practice is for her to recite the
mantra and the praise.
Also, it would be very
beneficial for her to recite the mig-me mantra; this is Lama
Tsongkhapa’s mantra. This would be very good as a daily practice, to
receive blessings from the guru to achieve realizations, complete all
the qualities, attain enlightenment, and be able to liberate sentient
beings from all samsaric sufferings and bring them to enlightenment.
With much love and prayers...
Remembering
Yesterday was an auspicious day for Tibetan Buddhists. I attended a Tsok feast, where I ended my weeklong "afternoon" fast. I had some difficult dreams last night and some positive ones too. Today has been relatively smooth, though far from stable.
I remember when my qigong teacher first told me that I had foreign spirits occupying my body, an ability she developed while training under an advanced energy master growing up in China. At first, I wasn't worried. I knew the Buddhist practices to do and they had been successful for me in the past. But this time was different. The situation worsened. I started barely being able to breathe and it felt like people were holding my body down when I would wake up. Unfortunately, this was when I learned about paralysis ghosts and yin beings, beings who are stuck in the human realm and cannot move to the higher realms. I tried to help them with the Buddhist sutras, but I didn't have enough energy. I could barely open my mouth to talk and a few times my body completely froze and I would be fully conscious, trying to do everything I could do to move. I remember screaming and screaming and still not being able to move my body.
During this time, when the situation was really bad, I asked my qigong teacher (who is highly respected healer around the world) if I had developed schizophrenia from the foreign spirit issue. She said no, and she told me to always remember what I was experiencing was real - even if others didn't believe me. She said, 'look I can see what's going on, these spirits are locking you out of your body." She also said that they doing this so they could get enough merits to move on.
Look, I also made some serious mistakes. At the time, I was asking to go on soul travel to different places, including inner-plane ashrams, as I had read about in Joshua David Stone's Ascension series. I don't believe the inner-plane ashrams are dangerous. From my experience, they made me feel joyful and relaxed. But some of the other places I went were dangerous. Now I am strong enough again to transfer merits (via the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door) to my karmic creditors[also known as foreign spirits or energy requesters] and I have enlisted some help from Hsi Lai Temple. Things are improving, though I am far from a feeling of genuine stability where I can have a normal life. But that is my hope and that is, hopefully, the reason for this blogging journey. To give an idea of how fare I've come: For awhile I couldn't even go to a restaurant and sit still. Terrible thoughts filled me constantly and seemed to attract difficult circumstances. I couldn't go anywhere without having terrifying visions and extremely dark thoughts about others. Now I can go places, store, restaurant and I'm basically ok. Some frustrating thoughts, but I am not completely disabled by them as I was for awhile.
I'm still reciting little houses on a good pace. I just passed the 50 mark out of 800 that must be finished per the recommendations. For anyone interested in trying the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, which has the potential to improve physical and mental illnesses, go to guanyincitta.com/en

Looking Back, Looking Forward
Today I am tempted to look back. Just a few years ago I was in a wonderful place in my life and I always have fond memories of that time. But the only reality is the one I am facing now, which is sometimes very difficult. Usually, I frame it as if I have been through a serious tragedy- which in fact I have- and their is some heavy PTSD around that. I mean, I couldn't walk at all for two years and even then I couldn't walk for more than a block with crutches. I never thought I would walk again; my legs didn't seem to be recovered. Now, my legs will probably never recover to their full strength and energy, barring a miracle; but I can walk again- and I can walk as far as I want.
I think I need to view my mental illness this way; as something that seems unlikely to recover from. The bad days have gotten significantly better and the good days are ok. But the general day to day is still very hard and somewhat like living in a "liveable" nightmare. But so was the knee issue. For two years it got worse and worse, but it did turn around even when it seemed impossible.
Looking back I remember how fun it was to have a body that really worked well and a future that looked really bright. Looking forward it is slightly hazy; I see the opportunity to work a volunteer job and continue my Buddhist practice. But looking forward is much more productive than looking back; even though it is much more difficult to look forward when you have a chronic physical illness and serious mental illness. I still feel like that person I was before and I can feel more of that self coming through all the time, but I have a ways to go. But the little houses are still going smoothly and I have been healthy enough to spend time with friends, release crabs, and get out in nature a bit. Looking forward? Yes!

3 day Tibetan Buddhist retreat
I just finished a very intense 3 day retreat; it was probably too much for me in my current shape. I met some cool people and I am glad I went, but I am exhausted. I had bad dreams last night and I feel pretty "fried" this morning. I have been completing little houses at a good pace; I had three days in a row of completing 2 little houses in a day, which means there are good signs. During the retreat, despite so much activity (chanting, lecture), I was able to complete one little house each day. I had a pretty tough experience yesterday, where my thoughts were getting pretty negative and scary during the morning Drupcho practice. After the morning session, I went to the park to work on a little house. I laid in the grass for awhile and reflected on a few things; some of my sweet memories from the past and my memories of winter time. I was also thinking: how am I going to make it through my life in this shape? I'm only 27. The last year with this mental illness has felt like 10. It's only been one year- one year! Usually the answer that comes is that: well, you have to recover. And the wonderful thing is that the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door offers real hope of recovery and improvement.
I have improved tremendously but I am still seriously ill; I am not in the clear yet, and I do not have a normal life. I am holding out hope that one day, in this very life, that I will be able to say that I am 1) in the clear, able to move freely through my life without fear of mental disturbances and spirit harm and 2) that I have a somewhat normal life
Blessings to all who are suffering, may there be some bright spots in every day.

Good Signs
I was able to complete two little houses today, which is rare. To have the mental and physical energy to recite that many mantras (430+) in the span of a few hours is truly a gift. When I look back just 8 months ago, it would take me a week to recite one little house. This is a significant milestone and I am very grateful. I had pretty good dreams overall last night and a few wonderful things happened today; so giving thanks, giving thanks...

Keeping Pace
I had some mixed dreams last night. But I woke up and things went pretty well. There were improvements in all areas of my life. By the way, I have been keeping pace with my little house goal; I have been reciting about one a day. I was able to work a little bit on the children's story I've been writing about a grove of pine trees on a small mountain as they sing and weather the seasons and emotions of life; and how one tree overcomes tragedy with the help from a man who finds solace and strength in his adventures on the mountain. When I was writing, I started getting excited - and then some of my symptoms spiked, so I realized I had to calm down and rest. All the improvements I've experienced are not worth putting out all my energy on this story - even if it does excite me to work on it...

1 little house, Sunday Chenrezig Meditation
I recited one little house today and I am working on a second. I attended the Tibetan Sunday Chenrezig Meditation at 10a and I did a crab release later. My dad and I went to get soil for the raised bed in our backyard. I had a tough morning...I have a serious physical illness that takes everything I have to get through every day - on top of the mental health struggles. It's a strange life, considering what life was like 4 years ago when I was pretty healthy, pursuing professional athletics, and waking up happy, confident, and excited every day. Now my body feels 80. Actually I have a close friend who is 88 and he's in great health - a lot better than mine. So my body feels 100.
I hope to recover more. My dad and I were talking about heading out to the mountains after the winter. Or possibly spending some time in Ashland, Oregon. Life is more precious now. It was precious before and I had tons of gratitude. The difference is now I have to be grateful for some of the pain for teaching me. What will I learn from the pain? Can I take these lessons into my next life?

Reciting
I recited two little houses in the last two days; the reciting is going fairly well. I have more energy to recite and I feel that the results are very positive. I am still not in a place where my dreams are telling me how many little houses are needed, like they did when i first started this work. Whether that comes again or not, I am moving forward and I am finding success in my goal. Is it easy? No. Will it get easier? Many things are possible...

Coming off a Bad Day
Two days ago, I had a pretty bad day. I experienced some terrifying dreams as well, and it's taken me awhile to get over it. Things went well yesterday and things are going well today, so I have reason to stay positive and practice gratitude. I still go into shock sometimes because I've had so many terrifying experiences in the last year.. The big challenge is being able to move forward throughout tragedy, difficulty, and confusion. How do I move forward? Gratitude. Gratitude for the people in my life who have made me feel accepted, special, powerful, important. Thank you!

Trip to Big Sur
I have improved a lot. Last year, I couldn't have even thought of a trip to Big Sur. Going that far would exacerbate symptoms and I wouldn't have been able to enjoy it. This week, though, I was able to not only go, but enjoy it as well. It still wasn't easy at times. I have much more fear than I ever had before. Before, I didn't have to stay so focused on doing the right things and keeping my mind as calm as possible. The internal struggle is beyond what I could have understood before.
I have been able to really appreciate my Dad and his journey. Although at times I get frustrated by his attempts to control my Buddhist work, he told me on our trip that it's just because he really wants me to improve and he doesn't want me to overdo it - which actually made me feel pretty good
But I more than got through the trip, even though the last few days were a bit rough. I was able to recite one little house during the trip and I felt some improvement in the night terrors. As I am writing this, I had a particularly difficult dream last night; but the night before was really positive. I am looking forward to getting back on pace a little bit, and I will write back with changes - positive or negative - as I hopefully return to my normal pace of recitation.
I am on day 6 of my daily 1 hour meditation goal for 80 days. I have noticed clear improvements in my life and my well-being.
Today, I am feeling slightly overwhelmed and very spent. Physically, I would appreciate greater energy and ease. I am looking out at a distant hurdle and these goals of mine are that hurdle. Like anything in life, once we jump a hurdle, we still have a race to run. I think I am scared about my future. I also have a serious physical illness and I just don't know how many years my body can take this stress of physical and mental disease. I guess I hope that by doing my meditation goal and by reciting little houses I will be able to have a much healthier and balanced life. So maybe I am putting a lot on this goal - maybe I need to adjust the goal. I think getting successfully to age 30 with greater health is a fantastic goal.

Pursuing my goal
I completed the rest of the fourth little house since starting this blog, so that's four days. I can feel that some negative energy from my energy requesters has lifted, hopefully they were able to move on to good places for spiritual growth and transformation. If I continue my pace I will reach my monthly little house goal.
Attending the fire puja yesterday seemed to have a calming effect on me, although my dreams were pretty difficult, reminding me to be cautious in my efforts. I was able to do my hour of meditation in the morning and some healing energy came through my leg and my body. At one point, my whole body shook.

My Dreams, and my meditation goal
Recently, my dreams have been improving. More positive, which makes it easier to get through the day. One of the energetic healers I'm working has said that some of the pieces of my consciousness that had travelled out and are reintegrating back into my body and mind. I feel that my dreams are the best gauge of how I am doing. When the dreams are poor, I generally have to do much more work to get through the day...
I completed 3 little houses in the last two days, which is a fast pace. I won't quite finish the one I started today, but that will still be 4 in 4 days, which is the best I have done in a long time. I have also set a recent meditation goal of sitting in one period for a least one hour each day, for 80 days - which wasn't too difficult before this illness but is now very hard. Thankfully, it is doable right now, and I couldn't have said that last year around this time. It is written in a Buddhist sutra that meditating specifically for a period of 60, 80, or 120 days, and then doing a brief ceremony of repentance or gratitude on the 21st day can bring healing benefits. It is my hope that this meditation goal will benefit others, and bring more harmony and health to my family.
I attended a fire puja today at Vairotsana Tibetan Center. It was led by a female Rinpoche from the East who was extremely kind. I was able to help a little bit in the preparations and in the feast afterward. The healing energy there was very warm and bright.

1st post: I'm not sure
Let me start by saying I am not sure if it will work. I am currently living with reactive schizophrenia, which started about one year ago, and it has taken away by ability to lead a normal life. It is the intent of this blog to document my journey, my goal of improvement and eventual recovery from this mental illness. The basis of this blog is the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door at http://guanyincitta.com/en, which has been used successfully to heal schizophrenia and other mental and physical conditions. This healing work involves reciting a combination of mantras and filling in dots representing the mantras recited. The paper (called a little house) is then burned and sent to one's "energy requesters", who are beings or foreign spirits that occupy one's body and etheric field, which cause a host of illnesses. When there are auditory hallucinations, it is possible that this is due to foreign spirits which occupy the body. Sending little houses is a form of paying back debt to these foreign spirits, so they can leave our bodies, be able to proceed to favorable places or rebirths, and allowing us to live more full lives.
In my case, this issue was diagnosed by a qigong master before it turned into schizophrenia. After class, this master took me aside and told me that there were foreign spirits occupying my body (someone who had been trained in the special ability to see the energy field) and they were causing physical problems. Soon, these turned into sleep disturbances, including sleep paralysis, where I would have terrifying nightmares and then wake up fully conscious and not be able to move my body for a few minutes. I was told that this was an issue of "spiritual possession" by a qualified master, so this is not a case of me making this up. I was even told that sometimes issues like this can turn into schizophrenia, so I was prepared ahead of time. That being said, the secretary at Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door has said that with 800 little houses recited, there is a good chance for improvement. This will take several years, as after 3 months I have only done about 20.
I will continue to post updates and improvements about my progress; I hope that this will inspire others who are suffering from schizophrenia or other disorders of mind, body, or spirit to seek out the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door. People of all faiths have had good results; and I have seen improvement so far as well. The biggest improvement has been that I have the mental energy to do more, including reciting mantras. Several months ago, I could not even recite one little house for myself because my mind was so scattered and weak. I had terrible thoughts and auditory hallucinations. Now these are still present, but greatly reduced and more "in the background". My life is still extremely difficult and the amount of courage I've had to display to get through each day is more than I ever imagined putting out. The most difficult thing right now is the terrifying dreams. I will write back soon about the dreams...and more..
